Lap Map Alert — Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 28, 2026

Lap Map Alert ("the app") is a Garmin Connect IQ data field plus Android companion that sends SMS messages you configure when you start, lap, or end an activity.

Developer: Lap Map Alert (published via MindShaft / contact on store listing)

Summary

  • The app does not operate a central server and does not sell your data.
  • Data stays on your devices unless you send SMS, which shares text with your chosen recipients and your mobile carrier.
  • You control whether alerts are on, who receives texts, and what information is included in messages.

Information the app uses

Stored on your phone only

  • SMS recipient phone numbers you enter in the Android app.
  • Your preferences (units, which message fields to include, race distance for ETA, signature text, on/off switch).

Activity and performance data (watch → phone)

When alerts are ON and you are in a GPS activity with the data field on your activity screen, the watch sends event data to the Android app via Garmin Connect Mobile. This may include:

  • Elapsed time and lap time
  • Distance (cumulative and per lap)
  • Pace or speed (derived from lap or overall activity data)
  • Estimated time of arrival (if you set a race distance)
  • GPS location (latitude/longitude for Google Maps links)

These are fitness and activity performance data. They are used only to compose SMS and show status in the app.

Not sent today (may be added later)

The app does not currently read or send heart rate, cadence, power, elevation, or other sensor metrics in SMS. If optional metrics are added in a future update, this policy will be updated and you will control them through app settings where possible.

SMS content

The Android app builds SMS text from the data above and your settings, then sends it using your phone number through your mobile carrier to recipients you choose. Anyone who receives an SMS sees whatever you included in that message (including location links).

How we use information

  • To send SMS to your chosen recipients.
  • To show watch link and delivery status in the Android app.
  • We do not use your data for advertising or analytics on developer servers (there are no developer servers).

Data retention

  • Preferences and recipient numbers remain on your phone until you change or uninstall the app.
  • We do not retain activity or location data on developer servers.
  • SMS messages are retained according to your carrier and recipients’ devices, not by us.

Third parties

  • Garmin Connect Mobile relays messages between the watch data field and the Android app (Garmin’s terms apply).
  • Your mobile carrier delivers SMS (carrier terms apply).
  • Google Maps links in SMS use coordinates from your watch at lap or finish time (Google’s terms apply when someone opens the link).

Your choices

  • Turn alerts OFF in the Android app when you do not want messages sent.
  • Remove or change recipients at any time.
  • Toggle which fields appear in SMS (time, pace, last lap, maps link, etc.).
  • Turn off Live Event Sharing in Garmin Connect if you want only Lap Map Alert texts.

Location and activity data are used only when you have enabled the app and are in an activity — not in the background when alerts are off.

Permissions (Android)

  • SMS — send texts to recipients you choose.
  • Bluetooth — communicate with your Garmin watch via Connect IQ.
  • Notifications — show that the app is active during a run.
  • Foreground service — maintain the watch link while the phone is locked.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13.
